This & That 7/10: What to Watch, Read, & Buy

Too Much, Series, Netflix. This new rom-com series about a young American woman who goes to London to find herself is out today, so we haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, but we are extremely hopeful, given that 1.) The trailer is excellent 2.) It stars Megan Stalter, who steals every scene she’s in on Hacks, and 3.) It’s produced by the the producers of Notting Hill. It’s a Lena Dunham project, loosely based on her life. We can’t wait to watch!
Alpha Males, TV Series, Netflix. This series was highly recommended to us! Pedro, Luis, Raúl, and Santi are four friends who feel a bit lost in the new world of empowered women, each trying to adjust in their own haphazard way.

The Book Club for Troublesome Women: A Novel by Marie Bostwick. Chrissie flew through this book in a day, thinking it was going to be a beach read but finding it so much more than that. Set in the early 1960s, when a woman couldn’t even open a bank account without her husband’s signature, the book centers on a group of suburban housewives who start to question their roles as mothers and homemakers, exploring how they can still fulfill their own interests and goals outside of that world. Their book club friendships become their support system, which both awakens these ideas and then supports and fuels them. It's not a heavy book, but it's really enjoyable and a good summer read.
We wanted to share a few of our favorite books that you may not have heard of/read.
Running with Sherman by Christopher McDougall. How to explain this wonderful book?! It’s about the author’s move to Amish country. It’s about a donkey race. It’s about community. It’s really, really good!
The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony. The true story of a South African conservationist who takes on the task of raising a ‘rogue’ herd of elephants. We dare you to look at elephants the same way after reading this!
Land of a Thousand Hills: My Life in Rwanda by Rosamond Halsey Carr. If you're a fan of Out of Africa, this book is for you. It’s a true story about a woman who travels as a young bride from NYC to Rwanda (the Belgian Congo at the time) in 1949 and the life she built for herself there over the following 50 years.
Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. Many of you may have already read this, but in case you haven’t please add it to your list! Comedian Trevor Noah (who Chrissie is excited to see in a show this weekend) gives a funny and touching account of his youth in South Africa during the twilight of Apartheid. Listen to it if possible, as he is the amazing narrator.
The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. Yes, this is a ‘sci-fi’ book, but please give it a chance! It’s about a Jesuit priest sent to make contact with the first extraterrestrial beings discovered in 2019. Two of Chrissie’s kids rated it as their favorite book on their college apps.

FabList favorite, Frank & Eileen, is having a 40%+ off of its sale styles! F & E rarely put things on sale, so this is a great one! The Victoria Tuxedo Shirt is 50% off, and things are selling fast, so don’t delay!
In case you missed it, our summer hostess gift list is here. But we wanted to add these terrific Chappywrap blankets to the list as well - perfect for getting cozy on any couch while reading a book, napping, or watching tv!
Trader Joe’s Cottage Cheese Ranch Dip. Chrissie’s sister introduced her to this item, and it’s a good one for summer get-togethers. Tastes just like a great ranch dip, but it’s incredibly low-calorie. Chrissie’s kids were home visiting and ate the entire container the day she brought it home. Highly recommend.
